Sun 24th July – I checked out early in the morning and caught my OzExperience bus to Kroombit Cattle station. We decided to stop at a café for breakfast but we ended up waiting almost an hour and a half for coffee and breakfast so we were all really annoyed as we were on such a tight schedule! Not a good start to the day. We got to Rockhampton around 11.30 (instead of at 10am like we were supposed to) and switched buses to take the shuttle to Kroombit. When I arrived at Kroombit, I got off the bus and saw Jess and Laura, 2 of the girls I started my OzExperience bus travels with! It was so weird to see them! They had been working in a hotel in Rockhampton and were also continuing to travel up the East Coast so we were in shock as we didn’t think we’d see each other again! After lunch at Kroombit, I signed up for a Quad Bike tour.
This was so much fun! Everyone else chose to do horse riding so I had a private tour. I saw kangaroos and wallabies and it was really cool to drive around the cattle station’s 10,000 acres. We stopped for a few minutes so that the farmer could show me how cattle are reared and de-horned when they are first brought in. I think he was expecting me to gush with excitement when he started telling me how he fattens them up to get the best steak but being vegetarian, I wasn’t keen on hearing his stories and we quickly moved on! At 4pm we had a goat rodeo with the goats that horseriders had shepherded that afternoon while I was quad-biking. We were taught how to lasso a goat, and then I had a go at shooting clay discs with a shotgun. I’d never done this before so it was a memorable experience. In the evening after a lovely dinner, we were shown how to crack a whip, and then given a go at riding a mechanical bull. Naturally I fell straight off - head first I might add which was very entertaining for those watching! But luckily the 6 girls that followed me did the same thing so I didn’t look so stupid after that! By 9pm we were all so tired we went to bed early. There were 6 of us in one room and Jess, Laura with 4 others in the room next door. There was only a thin divider between our rooms with a large gap at the top so all of us were chatting across the wall to each other whilst we were in bed, telling jokes and funny stories. It reminded me of sleepovers when I was a child!
