Mon 30th January – We were dropped off in Adelaide city centre by Robin on her way to work which was handy. It was such a relief to be away from the farm and back in a city again! We treated ourselves to a pancake breakfast, got my hair cut for the first time in Australia and then spent the day sorting out onward travel. Katrina booked onto a tour to Alice Springs leaving a couple of days before me whilst I booked onto a 2 day tour of Kangaroo Island. We were happy that we would see each other in Alice Springs again and we were both planning to stay there and look for work. Whilst we were at the travel agent Peterpans I bumped into Rachael and Dec – 2 people I’d met in Bundaberg! Rachael and I shared a room together and hadn’t seen each other since July so it was nice to catch up! When we got back to the hostel they’d upgraded us to a 4 bed dorm which had 2 single beds in it and no other people so it felt like a private room!
Tues 31st January – I was having problems with my new phone so I spent the day in phone shops trying to exchange it for another one. I succeeded! In the evening me and Katrina met up with a Canadian girl from our Great Ocean Road tour who was working as a teacher in Adelaide. She came to our hostel and we had a catch up over Dominos :)
Weds 1st February – Me and Katrina had both booked to swim with dolphins today! It came as part of the tour packages we bought on Monday. I’m glad we didn’t pay full retail price for it as it wasn’t worth it. It was a cold morning so sitting on the deck of a boat with the wind blowing as we sailed wasn’t nice. We saw lots of dolphins from the boat though which was cool, but the whole point of today was to see them when we snorkel which didn’t happen as the visibility in the water was so bad. When there was a pod of dolphins nearby, the crew would tell us to get in the water as fast as we could whilst holding on to ropes. We had to keep hold of the rope with one hand the whole time due to safety reasons, but because of the current and the movement of the boat we ended up constantly bumping into each other and swimming on top of each other.
It was an awful experience and Katrina only went snorkelling the one time. I tried it a couple more times but I found I saw more dolphins from the boat than when I was in it. Even when the crew yelled that they were swimming under us and that we should look down, we couldn’t see anything as the water wasn’t clear! The plus side was it was warmer in the water than on the boat! We finished the dolphin swim by 11am and then walked around Glenelg beach and went shopping. It’s a really nice wide beach, it’s a just a shame it was quite cold that day and we didn’t want to spend the day sitting on the beach. In the evening the hostel had free pizza night and we met a girl in our room called Leticia who said her cousin is working in Alice Springs and said there’s lots of work available there. She mentioned the name of a hostel where long termers stay so we kept that in mind for when we get there.
Thurs 2nd February – After a lazy morning, me, Katrina and Leticia took a bus for an hour to a village in the Adelaide Hills called Hahndorf. This was originally a German settlement and today it is filled with German pubs and German shops! Katrina felt right at home here!
We originally just wanted to stop by for an hour but it was so lovely we ended up spending the whole day there. We went to a cheese tasting, a fudge tasting and a wine tasting which was lovely.
Fri 3rd February – Today I went shopping in the morning and treated myself to some new clothes. In the afternoon, Kimberley picked me and Katrina and took us to her house to hang out. She’s staying in a lovely house with a pool so we went for a swim, had Tim Tam slams, and Kimberley made us grilled cheese sandwiches – my first time! It was really fun to hang out and she dropped us back to the city so that we could pack for our trips the next day. I was going to Kangaroo Island for 2 days then returning back to Adelaide and Katrina was doing a 6 day tour up to Alice Springs so the next time I see her would be there.
